This exhibition is the final installment in a series exploring the seven principles of art and design, featuring works from The Art Center's Permanent Collection. Each exhibition has showcased a unique mix of artworks across different styles and mediums. In this concluding exhibition, Shape takes center stage, offering a curation that emphasizes the flatness of space in art.
Many of the works that defined the Modern Movement utilized shape as a fundamental design principle. Unlike earlier periods, such as the Renaissance and the Dutch Golden Age, which celebrated depth and dimensionality, modern artists focused on the flatness of the image. Pioneers like Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich explored shape to describe Russian Suprematism, an early 20th-century movement that emphasized geometry and color over-representation of real-life subjects.
This exhibition highlights a range of artists who have made shape the primary focus of their work, offering a fresh perspective on this essential element of art and design.
