About the Exhibition
Cover yourself in a thick blanket and don’t forget the hot cocoa, because The Art Center is pleased to usher in a new exhibition: The Seasons: Winter. This exhibition will feature works that have been hand-selected and curated from The Art Center’s Permanent Collection.
Landscape as a genre gained prominence in painting in the 16th century, when the subject matter began to shift from portrait to place. This shift didn’t eliminate the person as the subject of the composition. Rather, it reoriented the vantage point of the painting, giving the viewer a glimpse through the artists’ eyes.
A focus on rural life and natural landscapes formed the basis for naturalist and realist traditions in painting. Later movements such as Romanticism, the Barbizon School, and the Hudson River School, while philosophically distinct, borrowed much from the early Dutch masters.
