🎨 About the Exhibition
The Pastel Society of Colorado was founded in 1994 to promote pastel artists, the medium of soft pastel, and the appreciation of pastel painting. Today, the organization has grown into one of the larger pastel societies in the country with over 300 members from all over Colorado and surrounding states. The Pastel Society of Colorado actively supports its members with monthly meetings, regular plein air events, several juried shows every year, in-depth pastel workshops taught by well-known pastel artists/instructors, and an annual non-juried Members' Show which is open to all members. For more information or to become a member, please go to our website.
The Pastel Society of Colorado is pleased to have Colleen Howe Cheney as our awards judge for this year’s Members’ Show. Ms. Cheney grew up on a cattle ranch in Montana; the beauty of the Big Hole mountains and meadows influenced her decision to become an artist. She majored in painting and drawing at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. She has also studied painting with Michael Workman and T. Allan Lawson. Cheney has taught landscape painting across the United States for 25 years, and her work has been featured in Artists’ Magazine, Pastel Journal, and American Artists magazine. Cheney currently resides in Montana where she owns and operates the Tendoy Fine Art Gallery.
The title “The Soul of Color” was chosen for the 2025 Members’ Show because, as visual artists, we are reacting to color at almost every moment. Color inspires us and motivates us. It provokes an emotional reaction in us, and we attempt to portray that in a way that inspires an emotional reaction in our viewers. Our perception of color is affected by neighboring colors, which prompts an additional response in us as viewers and as visual artists. Color inhabits our world – it is a gift. It brings us joy, and we use it to bring joy to our viewers. We invite you to enjoy the Pastel Society of Colorado Members’ Show, The Soul of Color.
